South African mobile operator Cell C has reported a cybersecurity breach that may have exposed the data of “a limited number of individuals,” the company revealed in a customer letter dated January 8, 2025.

A Growing ThreatChallenges for Cell CCommitment to Recovery

The announcement, signed by Cell C’s Information Officer Themba Phiri, acknowledged the breach and detailed the immediate actions taken to address it.

“It is regrettable that we must inform you of a recent cybersecurity incident which we have reported to the Information Regulator,” the letter stated. “Upon discovery, immediate steps were taken to secure our systems, contain the incident, and conduct a thorough investigation to determine its scope and impact.”

Preliminary findings suggest that an unauthorised party accessed certain data, but Cell C emphasised that the breach was limited in scope.

A Growing Threat

Cell C highlighted the increasing prevalence of cybercrime, both locally and globally, while reaffirming its commitment to bolstering its cybersecurity infrastructure. “We remain committed to continuously strengthening our cybersecurity measures and improving our IT environment to mitigate these risks,” the company said.

The investigation is ongoing, and Cell C has promised to keep customers informed of any updates. In the meantime, the company advised customers to remain vigilant, take steps to protect their personal information, and update their passwords as a precaution.

Challenges for Cell C

The breach comes at a challenging time for Cell C, as the company works to rebuild its market position in South Africa. Once the country’s third-largest operator with a subscriber base of approximately 21 million in 2015, the company has faced a steady decline. By May 2024, Cell C’s subscriber numbers had dropped to 7.7 million, trailing behind Vodacom’s 57 million, MTN’s 37 million, and Telkom’s 21 million.

Cell C’s financial struggles, coupled with ongoing efforts to improve network quality and customer perceptions, have made the breach a potential setback for the operator’s recovery efforts.

Commitment to Recovery

Despite these challenges, Cell C remains focused on regaining market share and addressing customer concerns. The company reassured stakeholders of its dedication to transparency and robust security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

As cyberattacks become an ever-growing concern for businesses worldwide, Cell C’s experience highlights the need for vigilance and continuous improvement in cybersecurity practices.
