We spoke to Samukelo Vilakazi, a rising South African photographer who shared his journey with us and shared some highlights of journey.

What inspired you to get into photography?

What inspired me to get into photography was the urge to become independent at a young age while still maintaining a thrilling and entertaining life.

What’s the most exciting event you’ve taken pictures for in the past?

As an event photographer and private photographer for performing artists, the most exciting event I’ve had the privilege of photographing was an event called “Cotton Fest” which was a festival curated by the late Ricky Rick for the Hip hop community specifically the younger generation of this community.

What makes you stand out to potential clients?

What makes me stand out to potential clients is my photography style, I’ve got a unique way of editing my photographs and one of the skills I’ve managed to grasp is being able to capture a moment and effectively evoke certain emotions through stills.

Can you share any success stories or notable projects that have helped elevate your career?

I wouldn’t necessarily say there is a specific project that helped me elevate my career however being a private photographer for performing artists has helped me elevate my career as I am exposed to a variety of institutions such as radio stations, fashion stores, clubs etc. and being exposed to all these different places has provided me the opportunity to network with different professionals in different industries, allowing me to increase my opportunities to collaborate and work on different projects that have contributed not only to my career but my skill set as well.

What advice would you give to any aspiring photographers?

Consistency is key. Being great at what you do is not enough in this demanding industry so being able to create art through photography on a consistent and efficient basis is the crucial part of it all, as well as knowing the business side of photography. Educate yourself on the business side so that you know the value of what you offer and also be able to negotiate your rates accordingly and fairly.

How do you use social media to your advantage?

I use social media as a marketing platform to get my work out there for potential clients to see. I also use it as my portfolio when referring my work to clients as well as gathering reference photos for models/artists when coming up with ideas for photoshoots.

How can anyone reading this book your services?
