We spoke to Mzwandile Mazwi, the founder of Stories Ended Before Birth photography, as we wanted to receive some insight into the inspiration behind the style and flair of his photography, and his journey as a photographer.

What inspired you to get into photography?

My inspiration for photography is primarily rooted in a passion for equality. During my studies in Development Studies at university, I realized the potential to bridge the gap of inequality through creativity. For instance, I believe that high-end celebrities like Bonang Matheba having clean, high-quality images can set a standard. I aim to provide fellow individuals in the township with high-quality images through my services at an affordable price. Thus, the pursuit of equality is what primarily inspired me to get into photography, coupled with my love for capturing moments.

What’s the most exciting event you’ve taken pictures for in the past?

The most exhilarating event I have captured images for in the past was a community charity drive in my local community. This event holds greater significance for me than Gala dinners I’ve shot, as I am deeply committed to community development.

What makes you stand out to potential clients?

I believe several factors distinguish me to potential clients. Firstly, my professionalism sets me apart. Secondly, my strategic approach to photography marketing, emphasizing convenience and cost-effectiveness, makes my services appealing. Lastly, my accommodating approach, with no rigid price list but a focus on understanding and meeting clients’ specific needs, contributes to my uniqueness.

Can you share any success stories or notable projects that have helped elevate your career?

While I am still in the emerging phase of my career, a pivotal moment was the 2021 graduation season. It revealed gaps in my knowledge about photography as a discipline, prompting me to delve deeper into aspects such as lighting, composition, creative direction, client communication, and time management. This season served as a turning point, helping me refine my skills and contribute to my career’s upward trajectory.

What advice would you give to any aspiring photographers?

My advice to aspiring photographers is to focus not only on studying the fundamentals of photography through formal education or online resources like YouTube but also to delve into digital marketing. Understanding the creative side and the business side of photography is crucial for long-term success.

How do you use social media to your advantage?

Social media is a powerful platform for digital creatives, and I leverage it by consistently sharing my work across various platforms. I engage in active marketing, ensuring visibility for my work, promoting posts to reach a broader audience, and potentially attract new clients.
