We spoke to Matthew August, the founder of Matthew August Media, as we explored his journey as a photographer and the inspiration behind his stylish photos, and how he built himself from the ground, rising to being part of the esteemed photographers covering South Africa’s high-profile events.
What inspired you to get into photography?
From a young age, my fascination with media ignited a passion within me that eventually led me to explore the art of photography. It wasn’t until 2016, during my first year at Stadio School of Fashion (formerly known as LISOF), that I enrolled in my first class on fashion photography. Little did I know, this decision would mark the beginning of an incredible journey. Within just a month of starting my photography classes, I landed my first paid gig. That pivotal moment opened my eyes to the vast potential of photography as a career path. Since then, I’ve been driven by a deep-seated belief in the power of visual storytelling and the endless possibilities it offers in the dynamic world of fashion and media. With each click of the shutter, I strive to capture not just images, but moments that resonate and inspire.
What’s the most exciting event you’ve taken pictures of in the past?
My photography journey has been filled with exhilarating moments, from capturing the pulsating energy of Ultra South Africa in 2018 to the recent thrill of photographing G-Eazy at the Secrets Of Summer NYE party in Cape Town. Along the way, I’ve had the privilege of documenting performances by acclaimed artists like Black Coffee, Sho Majozi, and Nasty C, as well as covering prestigious events such as AFI Johannesburg Fashion Week and the National Film Awards red carpet in Pretoria. There’s a weekly Sunday event called Sorbae Sundays that I also capture I just love how vibrant the event attendees are.
Each experience has been a highlight, fueling my passion for capturing the essence of these unforgettable moments. I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to continue capturing the magic of future events and milestones in my photography career.
What makes you stand out to potential clients?
What sets me apart is my unique ability to not just capture images, but to encapsulate the essence and emotion of each moment through my photography. With a keen eye for detail and a knack for storytelling, I aim to create visuals that resonate deeply with viewers and leave a lasting impression. Additionally, my diverse portfolio, which includes events ranging from high-profile concerts to glamorous fashion shows & awards shows showcases my versatility and adaptability as a photographer. I am committed to delivering exceptional results, exceeding expectations, and forging meaningful connections with clients to bring their visions to life.
Can you share any success stories or notable projects that have helped elevate your career?
One of the most impactful projects that has helped shape my career was the opportunity to capture Lungi Ngidi, one of my favorite cricket players, during a coaching clinic with underprivileged kids. This experience not only allowed me to showcase my skills behind the lens but also gave me the chance to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young aspiring athletes. I am grateful to Rob Simpkins for entrusting me with this opportunity, as it not only boosted my confidence and experience but also helped me gain recognition within the industry. Through projects like this, I have been able to grow as a photographer and establish myself as a trusted professional in the field.
On a personal note, Photography has made me more confident and made me engage 📸with people more.
What advice would you give to any aspiring photographers?
My advice to aspiring photographers is to keep it authentic and straightforward. Take the time to define your goals and aspirations within the industry, and remain intentional in your pursuit of them. Familiarize yourself with your equipment and continuously strive to improve your technical skills. Let your work speak for itself, but don’t underestimate the power of networking and building genuine connections within the industry. By staying true to yourself and your vision while remaining open to learning and collaboration, you’ll be well-equipped to navigate the journey toward a successful photography career.
How do you use social media to your advantage?
I leverage social media as a powerful tool to showcase my work, connect with potential clients, and engage with my audience. By regularly sharing my photography portfolio, behind-the-scenes glimpses, and personal insights, I aim to cultivate an authentic online presence that resonates with followers. I actively engage with my audience by responding to comments, participating in relevant conversations, and sharing valuable content related to photography and creative inspiration. Additionally, I utilize social media platforms to stay updated on industry trends, connect with fellow photographers, and discover new opportunities for collaboration and growth. Ultimately, I view social media as a valuable asset in building my brand, expanding my reach, and establishing meaningful connections within the photography community and beyond.

My favorite photography style is characterized by simplicity and modernity, with a subtle nod to vintage aesthetics for inspiration. I am drawn to clean lines, minimalistic compositions, and a timeless appeal that resonates with contemporary audiences. By embracing simplicity and infusing my work with a touch of nostalgia, I aim to create images that evoke emotion and captivate viewers in a subtle yet impactful way.
