In a grand celebration of the monumental impact of hip-hop culture on a global scale, Back To The City has revealed the theme for this year’s eagerly anticipated event: “50 Years of Hip Hop” / “40 Years of S.A Hip Hop.” This announcement comes as an exciting surprise for festival-goers who eagerly anticipate each year’s unique theme, which pays tribute to both local and international hip-hop icons. This year is particularly special, as it marks the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, with South African hip-hop boasting a remarkable 40-year legacy within the culture.

“As we join the global hip-hop celebrations, the #BTTC2023 theme is ’50 Years of Hip Hop’ / ’40 Years of S.A Hip Hop,’ celebrating and honoring both international and national hip-hop icons. We look forward to seeing you at the official celebration festival on October 7th in Newtown,” announced Back To The City.

Renowned for its electrifying performances, breathtaking art installations, and immersive cultural experiences, the festival has consistently pushed boundaries and provided a platform for creative expression and unity for 17 years.

This hip-hop extravaganza promises to once again seize the opportunity to celebrate urban culture while paying homage to rap artists who have made enduring contributions to the genre, both living and deceased. The 2023 event promises a star-studded lineup of local rap talents including the likes of Kwesta, 25K, Big Zulu, A-Reece, Gigi Lamayne, Maglera Doe Boy, Priddy Ugly, Reason, Tuks and many more! The lineup is set to have one surprise international act which shall cater for the core Hip-Hop fans who are matured within the culture, as within the previous years, the stage has featured the likes of Talib Kweli and Keith Murray among many great pioneers and influencers of the Hip Hop culture. All this is  set to take the stage on October 7th, 2023, in Newtown, Johannesburg.
