Refilwe Boitumelo Moromane, a 23-year-old law student and Miss Intercontinental South Africa 2024 semi-finalist, embodies resilience and the pursuit of justice. Hailing from Brits in the North West province, Refilwe’s journey is one of overcoming personal challenges and channeling them into a powerful force for change.

Early Life Shapes Passion

Growing up in Brits, Refilwe’s life was marked by hardship. Witnessing her mother endure hardship after her father’s passing at just five years old ignited a fire within her. “At six,” she recalls, “I vowed no woman would experience what my mother did.” This vow fueled her passion for law and dismantling gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide.

Personal Battles Forge Strength

Refilwe’s strength wasn’t forged solely through external struggles. At 16, she bravely confronted her own mental health challenges, experiencing a breakdown that led to anxiety and hospitalization. “These moments shaped my desire to serve,” she explains, highlighting the importance of mental well-being alongside her other advocacy efforts.

Education: A Tool for Empowerment

Refilwe sees education, particularly legal knowledge, as a weapon against injustice. “Knowing the law is arming,” she asserts. Her legal studies are driven by a humanist philosophy, where service to others is paramount.

Pageantry as a Platform

As a Miss Intercontinental South Africa 2024 semi-finalist, Refilwe leverages this platform for advocacy. The pageant, led by empowering women like Bokang Motjane Tshabalala, aligns perfectly with Refilwe’s mission. “I plan to educate the youth about rape, consent, and seeking justice,” she says, emphasizing collaboration with organizations like Lawyers Against Abuse.

Empowering the Next Generation

Refilwe’s vision extends beyond legal intervention. She believes in equipping children with the knowledge and vocabulary to protect themselves. “I want to give every child a voice,” she emphasizes. This proactive approach aims at preventing abuse and fostering a generation confident in setting boundaries.

A Legacy of Resilience

Refilwe’s achievements are a testament to her determination. Titles like Miss Teenager South Africa North West 2020/21 and Miss World Semi-Finalist 2023 solidify her journey. Her dedication to service extends beyond advocacy, with provincial colors for Performing Arts and gold medals at the South African Championships.

Looking Forward: A Life of Service

As Refilwe awaits the Miss Intercontinental South Africa finale, her commitment remains unwavering. “My purpose is to serve,” she concludes. Refilwe Boitumelo Moromane is an inspiration, a testament to the transformative power of overcoming adversity and using knowledge to fight for a more just world.
