The Harmonious Blend of Beats and Brands: Back To The City 2023 Celebrates Hip-Hop’s Legacy with Hennessy

Africa’s largest hip-hop celebration, Back To The City, once again electrified the stage at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Johannesburg, surpassing all expectations and leaving a lasting mark on the hip-hop scene. In a strategic partnership with Hennessy, this year’s event saw the fusion of grand stage designs and outstanding performances, building upon the success of their collaboration the previous year.

 

 

Osmic Menoe, the visionary founder and director of Back To The City, the South African Hip-Hop Museum, and the South African Hip-Hop Awards, expressed immense pride in having Hennessy as a key partner. The synergy was especially significant as this year’s edition coincided with the global celebrations of 50 years of hip-hop, underscoring Hennessy’s long-standing association with this vibrant musical genre.

 

Lungile Mpharu, Brand Manager at Hennessy, emphasized the brand’s enduring commitment to hip-hop as a means to shape culture and foster unity through the arts. The festival showcased unforgettable performances by renowned US artists such as Mobb Deep’s Havoc, Beatnuts, and J Live, evoking a sense of nostalgia and taking hip-hop enthusiasts on a trip down memory lane.

The festival was a testament to South Africa’s thriving hip-hop scene, featuring top artists like Ifani, Reason (Sizwe Alakine), Big Zulu, Sjava, and Stogie T. Even the legendary kwaito group Trompies graced the stage, showcasing their timeless moves and music. The performers skillfully interwove international hits with local favorites, honoring the roots of hip-hop while celebrating its global impact.

 

 

 

Back To The City not only attracted hip-hop aficionados but also drew fans of the culture, including those passionate about fashion, art, dance, and basketball. Brands like Converse and Sprite, understanding the cultural significance of the event, have consistently supported it, further enhancing the festival’s reach and impact. The festival featured stellar performances by South Africa’s hottest artists, including 25K, Touchline, Thato Saul, Maglera Doe Boy, and Gigi Lamayne.

 

 

 

The evening paid homage to the iconic AKA, honoring his musical legacy and leaving an emotional impact on the audience. The “Hennessy Moment” was a dynamic experience that embodied the essence of hip-hop through stunning performances, captivating visuals, and immersive stage production.

Overall, Back To The City 2023 showcased the power of hip-hop to unite communities, transcend borders, and celebrate a vibrant culture that continues to shape the world. With collaborations, performances, and heartfelt tributes, the festival highlighted the enduring legacy of hip-hop while paving the way for its promising future.
